Mrs. Swart and Mrs. Callan’s Pre-K Enrichment classes at Arrowhead Elementary recently made a splash while learning about buoyancy as part of their engaging Zoom unit, which explores different types of jobs and real-world concepts.

During the lesson, students observed how a submarine can sink and rise, sparking curiosity and excitement. They then took part in a hands-on activity where they tossed objects into a bucket of water, keeping score to see if their aim matched the outcome. Along the way, they discovered how water can distort the appearance of where objects are, and learned how to adjust their throws accordingly.

Both the AM and PM classes had a fantastic time experimenting, exploring and learning through play, bringing science to life in a fun and meaningful way.

This spring, the Arrowhead Garden Club has been buzzing with activity as students in grades 4-6 dug into hands-on gardening projects. Under the guidance of advisers Ms. Turano and Mrs. Scaglione, club members learned how to propagate trees from cuttings and planted milkweed to attract monarch butterflies. The students also explored sustainable gardening practices, including composting and hydroponics, with help from expert master gardeners. Adding a creative touch, members practiced floral design while enhancing the beauty of the school’s entrance. The club continues to inspire young environmental stewards with every seed they plant.

Arrowhead Elementary School was thrilled to welcome Dr. Robert Prezant, president of Farmingdale State College and a distinguished marine biologist, for an exciting, hands-on learning experience with the fifth grade students on March 21. Dr. Prezant’s visit was part of the Visiting Scholars program, bringing real-world scientific expertise into the classroom.

Dr. Prezant introduced students to the fascinating world of marine life, showcasing preserved ocean specimens. Fifth graders handled specimens such as octopuses, baby sharks, sea worms and even deep-sea creatures like giant pill bugs and cowfish – all while learning about the vast biodiversity found in the world’s oceans. Safety gloves were provided to ensure a secure and interactive experience.

This visit built upon the students’ prior studies of ecosystems, reinforcing their understanding of marine environments and the intricate relationships between ocean species. By engaging directly with these specimens, students gained a greater appreciation for marine life and the importance of conservation efforts.

Arrowhead Elementary was grateful for the opportunity to host Dr. Prezant and looks forward to continuing to inspire young minds with the wonders of marine biology. The school also extended its appreciation to the Faculty Center and its director, Jennifer Jaiswal, for supporting this enriching educational experience. The event highlighted Arrowhead’s commitment to bringing innovative learning opportunities to its students and fostering curiosity about the natural world.
